Jay's philosophy, purpose & approach

 

While MentorU coaching packages are tailored to the needs of each individual client, my philosophy flows from my belief in the 3 fundamental principles for creating a significant life: taking action, remaining open-minded and identifying authentic interests, values and strengths.

My fundamental purpose in coaching clients is to help them improve the two most important skills for significance: a sense of personal agency (confidence, self-awareness and intrinsic motivation) and adaptability (creativity, critical thinking, interpersonal skills and resilience).

​

I introduce clients to a variety of exercises and interventions borrowed mostly from positive psychology and humanistic counselling techniques. We use these tools together as a means to facilitate self-exploration and purposeful discussion, rather than to offer simplified solutions to complex questions. I will help you by...

 

Guiding you through a personalized version of our Speaking for Significance training program. While the process is based in the same principles, individual coaching allows for more time to be spent on amplifying your individual strengths and correcting your challenges. This process involves the following steps:

 

  1. Define the purpose of your presentation

  2. Identify  important characteristics of your audience

  3. Outline a coherent and impactful structure to your speech

  4. Acquire in-depth knowledge of the material you are presenting

  5. Develop a compelling narrative to connect the audiences members to your story

  6. Integrate your authentic self into the style and delivery of your message

  7. Practice the skills that will enable you to engage the audience's emotions and persuade them

 

Your program will include some combination of the following exercises, depending on your personal motivations, needs and goals:

 

  • Self-reflection

  • Storytelling

  • Delivery for a test audience

  • Recording and reviewing of your practice speech

  • Post-secondary, gap year and career guidance
